The Early Adopter Programme is available to individuals and organisations who can purchase and make use of newly available BoomBox v2 (BBv2) capabilities to design and deploy more advanced experiments, integrate new modalities into their methodologies, and apply these capabilities in real-world research and conservation settings. Types of capabilities include new sensory expansion modules, playback mechanisms or integrations with existing monitoring tools.

The programme provides researchers seeking to extend their playback experiments with early access to new BBv2 capabilities. Participants can work directly with the development team during their experiment design phase to define configurations suited to their research, request custom configurations and, if interested, provide input on future platform capabilities*. Researchers also benefit from the development team’s direct support during assembly, setup, testing and field deployment when needed**.
Participation in the programme is optional and may be discontinued at any time.
What’s involved
As part of participation, researchers share non-confidential information (e.g. general aims, deployment context, system use, or non sensitive observations) relating to their research or conservation application. Participants can access the design team directly with any issues or configuration requests. This helps ensure the platform continues to support real-world research and conservation needs.
Researchers also share brief feedback or observations from their experience using the system, which may help improve usability, deployment workflows, and overall system performance.
Participants typically provide 2–3 high-resolution images or short video clips of the BoomBox system as installed in the field (e.g. behind-the-scenes) and/or captured footage. These may be used in website or communication materials with permission and standard accreditation (unless otherwise agreed). Additional media is welcome at the researcher’s discretion.
Participants retain full ownership of all data collected using their BoomBox systems. Freaklabs does not access, use, or share any project information, data, results, or materials without prior consent.
Process and Time Commitment
The programme is designed to integrate with existing experiment preparation and deployment workflows to minimise the impact on the researcher’s time. The process is:
Step 1: Complete the participation form.
After completing the participation form below, we’ll email you a confirmation email, and if your planned use differs from standard configurations outlined in the user guide, any additional questions.
Step 2: Receive Devices and Configuration Guidance
Upon equipment purchase, we’ll provide estimated shipping times, along with any further onboarding or guidance with system configuration or deployment setup.
In most cases, this process is brief and aligns with the normal preparation phase before a deployment.
Step 3: Interact with the Development Team
Once devices have shipped and configuration and set up assistance is provided, we may check in on up to four occasions.
- After assembly and setup. Nb: We strongly recommend testing the complete setup prior to deploying in the field. This ensures you’re familiar and comfortable with how the devices work before you get in the field.
- After deployment whilst devices are still running in the field. Nb. Where researchers are in the field, we will only reach out if communication is feasible and timing allows.
- Post deployment
Communications are generally via email, short survey and/or a short call (if necessary).
Post Programme (optional)
- Publication or project updates. We love to read and share your research so may contact you to see how it’s going!
Additional communication during the setup and deployment phases may be necessary according to the complexity of the new capability, functionality or deployment.
For support, where appropriate, we may open up a direct Slack channel, WhatsApp Group or other appropriate direct message application for quicker communication.
Participation terms
- Where applicable, participants purchase new capabilities (e.g. sensory expansion modules).
- Participation in the programme is voluntary and may be discontinued at any time.
- *Where suggestions or feedback are incorporated into the platform, Freaklabs may use these contributions on an irrevocable, non-exclusive, perpetual, royalty-free basis to improve the platform for the wider community.
- **Direct support is provided for core BoomBox v2 hardware and official firmware. Whilst we’ll work in good faith to ensure a smooth deployment, support outside of this scope (for example with third-party devices, user modifications, field damage, or unexpected, external factors beyond our control) is offered at the discretion of Freaklabs on a best effort, case-by-case basis.
- While we strive for reliable performance and timely delivery, Freaklabs cannot be held responsible for data loss, equipment damage, or project delays resulting from the use of BoomBox v2.
- Standard accreditation consists of the Participant’s Name and/or Institution. Unless otherwise requested in writing, Freaklabs will use this format for all public-facing materials featuring shared media.
